MIT LGO Delegate Finish its Visit to CLGO

SJTU CLGO and MIT LGO aims to educate leading talents inmanufacturing and operation field with international views. As the traditional annualactivity, 47 students and Professor Thomas from MIT LGO came to CLGO for thevisit in March, 2015. During the two day visit, CLGO and LGO students havecommunicated and exchanged ideas profoundly, which not only deepened thefriendship but also laid the solid foundation for CLGO’s trip to MITin this summer.
On March 22nd, separated totwo groups, CLGO and LGO students visited Shanghai and Wuzhen respectively. Itwas believed that a cultural trip would help MIT students learn more aboutChina and its long history and thus better understand this country. The ancientarchitecture and landscape in south east villages would give a directimpression of Chinese culture especially.
March was the best time of year in south east China. LGO and CLGOstudents came to Wuzhen, one of the six most famous water villages in China. Hereyou can enjoy the picturesque bridge, stream and cozy houses, reflecting itslong history. Students visited a famous dyer house—Hong Yuan TaiDyer House and all marvelled at its craftsmanship. They also tasted thedelicate food in Wuzhen and appreciated its decoration and taste. In theafternoon, they took around the village of its architectures from Qing Dynastyand took pictures in front of those engraved doors and windows.
On March 23rd, group one visited Caterpillar in Suzhou.Guided by CAT experts, students visited its welding and assembling plant,knowing deeper of its assembling line. After the visit, the product manageranswered students’ questionsconcerning the CAT’s developmentin China, the current situation of China’s heavy machinemarket, and the problem of upsurging labour cost. The Q&A helped studentsunderstand better of CAT’s advantage in Chinese market and competitionwith other competitors.
Group two, on the other hand, visited WNC (Kunshan) Corporation, asupplier for Verizon. The general manager of WNC introduced the 3P QualityManagement, reasonable advanced order period and the setup of safe inventory tostudents. The technical expert showed students around SMT and CIM line. Thisinspired students and encouraged them to apply what they learned in class toreality. The visit was a best chance to link knowledge with real operationpractice.
On March 24th, the two group visited Shanghai Wai GaoQiao and SanDisk (Shanghai). In Wai Gao Qiao, the operation manager introducedSIPG’s handlingcapacity, daily work, dock’s water depth and tide level and other basicinformation. During the Q&A section, the operation manager answered thequestions concerning the container-lift profit and working efficiency indetail. Then he showed students how a modern terminal was working: shipberthing, crane lifting containers, truck transferring containers and tirecrane storing. The whole process opened students’ eyes andbenefited them a lot.
In the meeting room of SanDisk in Shanghai Min Hang Zi Zhu HighTechnology Park, the general manager introduced the sales net profit, chipprocess technology and its future development. This gave students a preliminaryunderstanding of semiconductor industry. Then they learned the whole assemblyline of flash memory card from polish, print, cut and test to package. The standardizationand modernization of SanDisk left a deep impression in students’ mind. It wasworth mentioning that one of MIT LGO students would join SanDisk Program duringthe internship semester and the vice president of SanDisk came and gave a warm welcometo students.
In order to understand the operation situation of internationalcompany in China and promote the interaction between LGO and CLGO students,CLGO invited Stephen Shang, CEO of Honeywell to give a speech named Competingin China on March 25th. With the rapid development of Chineseeconomy, Honeywell faced with opportunities and competitions at the same time. Facingwith the completion, they took the positive strategy to cope with sharpreality. Stephen Shang’s sharing told MIT LGO and CLGO students areal market and inspired them to fully prepare for the future competition.
The visit was tight and fruitful. Although it lasted only for oneweek, LGO and CLGO students have established profound friendship by the trip tovillages and companies. The two parties hoped for more deeper communication andcooperation. LGO students expressed their gratitude to CLGO and extended theirwarm welcome for the upcoming MIT trip in June this year.
