Thinking and practice for operational excellence --- the 69th period CLGO SJTU-MIT CLGO forum report

On March 26, 2016, the 69th session of SJTU-MIT China global operations leader (CLGO) forum was successfully held in the S203 classroom of the new upper house of Xuhui campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This session of forum invited Mr. Fu Xiaojiang, the Asia director of consulting and training business of Milliken. Mr. Fu Xiaojiang having worked for Philips, Frost &Sullivan Consulting, Solving Efeso Consulting, Milliken and other world top 500 and global famous consulting companies, has nearly 20 years of excellent work experiences in operation and management. Founded in 1865, Milliken is one of the world's largest private manufacturers of textiles and chemicals. The company has a large number of textile chemicals and packaging products, and its products are widely used in the daily life of people, such as clothing fabric, carpet, furniture, textile and even aerospace application textiles and other fields.

Mr. Fu Xiaojiang firstly introduced the huge achievement of Milliken company made through operational excellence management system to everyone, and reviewed the historical process that the practice summarization of company through going to Japan to benchmarking study in the 1990s, the 39 production plants located in the six countries around the world, forming its own unique Milliken excellence operating system, and then exporting management experience. Then introduced the structure and key points of the operational excellence system in detail (including how to define waste and how to identify and achieve operational improvement goals). In the end, he shared his experience and experience accumulated in the past 20 years of excellent operation and management.

Milliken is a family owned enterprise with a history of more than 150 years, aspires to be a leader in business innovation and a practitioner of operational excellence. The company was five times listed in annual 100 best employers appraised by “fortune” magazine, and was one of the safest 17 American corporations appraised by the “occupational hazards” magazine, and was recognized by the national quality award of Malcolm Baldrige (USA), the AME Manufacturing excellence award, European quality award, British quality award and Canadian quality award, etc. won the record-breaking of 54 JIPM TPM awards, and is the only American company that owns both the national quality award of Malcolm Baldrige of the United States and the TPM award. All these achievements are attributed to the profound learning and practical innovation of TPM LEAN six sigma and other excellent operation and management concepts.

In the promotion and practice of its 39 production plants around the world, Milliken Company has summarized and innovated to generate its own unique Milliken excellent operation system. On the basis of safe production and clear strategy, through the framework of DTM, 5S production control quality management, skills improvement and other nine pillar methods, so as to form an efficient operational organizational system. The most prominent feature of the system is that the performance promotion and performance maintenance are equally important. Up to now, the system has provided assistance to more than 400 factories in 24 countries around the world.

Mr. Fu Xiaojiang believed that the following three aspects are particularly important to promote the successful experience of excellent operation management system in enterprises. First, to establish a clear vision for the development of the enterprise; Second, to obtain the heartfelt recognition and participation of all employees (managers and subordinates); Third, to use the method of organizational change management to deal with the implementation of the excellent operation management system; combined with customer cases, Mr. Fu Xiaojiang made a vivid explanation of the above three aspects of work methods.
