2015 CLGO students successfully completed the study tour in the United States

The China Leaders for Global Operations (CLGO) program of Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University aims to cultivate high-end talents in the field of Operations with an international perspective. In order to improve the international communication ability of CLGO students, CLGO program has designed a variety of international communication activities. On June 26, 2016, Professor Li Ning and teacher Chen Yingru led 25 students of CLGO 2015 class to start a 17-day study tour in the United States. During the study tour, CLGO teachers and students spent a week together with the teachers and students of LGO Leaders for Global Operations Program in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT. Meanwhile, they visited Boeing, Starbucks, Apple, Intel, SanDisk and other world-renowned enterprises, as well as Washington university, Stanford university and Harvard University.
On June 27, CLGO delegation first came to Boeing company in Seattle and was warmly received by LGO alumni who worked in Boeing. During the visit, CLGO students witnessed the working process of the super-large assembly factory. Through detailed explanation, CLGO students had a full understanding of the assembly process of the entire aircraft and the logistics of parts, and Boeing Company as a whole presented a prudent and rigorous feeling. This corporate culture also brought the customers a stable and secure experience.
On June 28, CLGO delegation came to Starbucks headquarters. As soon as they entered the corporate headquarters, students felt the strong corporate culture of Starbucks. A passion accompanied by caffeine and infinite love for coffee was deeply implanted in the heart of every employee. In the process of access, Starbucks supply chain VP and the chief tasting respectively gave their opinions from the angles of enterprise operation and coffee itself. Starbucks and when talking one of the most important challenges facing the globalization strategy --- regional differences lead to different taste preferences, CLGO students also used knowledge to gives their train of thought, which was recognized.
On the morning of June 29, CLGO students went to the Apple headquarters in Silicon Valley, where they were warmly received by Mr. Rob York who is the alumna of Apple VP, LGO, and the colleagues of the human resources department. As the cooperative enterprise of CLGO, Apple has been strongly supporting the development of CLGO program and has hired a large number of CLGO graduates in recent years. During this visit, Apple executives evaluated highly of CLGO students again and thanked them for their contributions to Apple. During lunch, Apple executives further communicated with CLGO students and proposed some suggestions to CLGO students, hoped that the students could have more innovative thinking and flexibly apply their knowledge to work.
After then, CLGO students came to Intel Company. the Vice President (VP) of Intel gave students a special speech, not only about his life experience, in a speech of an hour, Vice President also explained the profound in simple terms to integrate the various situations of the major life big decisions and facing related to the students. The CLGO students got the great encouragement. After that, LGO alumni who worked in Intel also had a face-to-face talk with the students. When talking about the change of roles of study and work, LGO alumni also gave some suggestions to the students. In the end, Ken, the product manager of Intel, led CLGO to visit the Intel museum, where the students learned about the chip making and the development process of Intel growth.
On June 30, CLGO students came to SanDisk Company, five executives of the SanDisk kindly received the students, Mr. Shiva Esturi, the SanDisk Supply Chain Enthusiast Gave students a wonderful lecture. In the lecture, Shiva shared with students the SanDisk production process and supply chain framework. Shiva summed up a set of methods of how to turn knowledge into work according to his many years of experience in operating,, and strung a line through the various methods that CLGO students learned into a line, made the students feeling their learned knowledge can create great value, in the end, five executives also recommended some books and the thinking of some kind of learning, made the students feeling benefited a lot from it.
On July 1, CLGO students came to Stanford University, listened to the course of professor, Ramesh Johari about big data. The course was divided into three parts: the first part, Ramesh Introduced the infrastructure of big data, the change of thinking from the local to the cloud, about the management of data streams, and mentioned the choice between application-oriented device and analysis-oriented design in the data collection process. In the second part, professor, introduced the essence of big data analysis, and mentioned some principles and applications of the previous big data technology. In the third part, pointed out the key of decision analysis, emphasizes relevance rather than causality, and emphasized that the purpose of doing experiments is to learn rather than verify right and wrong, and proposed the thinking about the cost of doing experiments. Through the study of this course, CLGO students reorganized the knowledge system of big data and tried to think from some new perspectives under the guidance of Ramesh.
After then, CLGO teachers and students then flew to the eastern United States to begin an eight-day visit to the MIT LGO program. During which they arranged a variety of activities. In terms of learning, CLGO students participated in the courses of LGO. In the courses of High Velocity and Operations Management, CLGO students and LGO students disorganized the grouping and cooperated with Paper Plane and Beer Game. Through the process perspective and operation of the supply chain, they experienced each link of the supply chain in practical games and had a deeper understanding of the decision-making of different link. In the annual cross-cultural communication courses of CLGO and LGO, the cultural differences between the east and the west were vividly demonstrated. In addition, LGO students also invited CLGO students to watch baseball games, went to sea to watch whales, attended parties and had dinner together. CLGO students and LGO students have developed a profound friendship in one week. LGO students also said that they would visit Jiao Tong University in March next year. On July 11, Lu Wei teacher who was visiting MIT gave a speech on marketing to LGO and CLGO students, which aroused the LGO students to attention to the Chinese market and the LGO students also expressed that they were benefited a lot from it.
On July 12, CLGO students left the United States with full of harvest and returned to Shanghai. Except visiting the famous universities in this study tour, expanding horizons and improve the ability of international communication, more important is making the CLGO students feeling the different culture and different ways of thinking, but also making students feeling the positive significance of the development of manufacturing and operating to promoting the competitiveness of the enterprise and even the country. While recognizing the gap, CLGO students have a more positive attitude and hope to become the future global operation leader of China through their own efforts and make their own contributions to the development of China's manufacturing and operation field.
