2015 class CLGO students successfully completed the visit to south China manufacturing industry

The China Leaders for Global Operations (CLGO) program of Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University staves to cultivate leaders who are proficient in technology and management, have a global vision, and have a deep understanding of the Chinese market environment for China and even the global operation field. In order to improve students‘’ understanding of the Chinese market and Chinese manufacturing industry, CLGO program has designed quite a number of domestic enterprise visits, among which the “China tour” is the most concentrated and intensive one-week enterprise visit and visit.

On September 9, 2016, CLGO2015 class students successfully completed the activity of manufacturing in southern China. During the trip, students visited three cities in southern China - Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and visited enterprises with rich experience in operation or manufacturing, such as Zeiss optics, Esquel, Guangqi Toyota Automobile, Huawei and Yantian Port.

On September 5th, the first stop of China tour, CLGO2015 class students came to Zeiss optics in Guangzhou. Firstly, the students visited the factory area of Zeiss optics and the whole lens production process. Then, in the exhibition hall of Zeiss optics, CLGO2015 class students had an in-depth communication with the lean production manager of Zeiss optics about the lean architecture of Zeiss. Zeiss optics implements a customer-oriented lean system with high quality and short lead time, implements the whole lean system through four modules of pulling principle, beat principle, process guide line and misplacing. In the process of communication, the students had gained a lot of lean practical experience.

On September 6th, the second stop of China tour, CLGO2015 class students came to the Esquel group production base located in Foshan, Guangzhou. Firstly, Lorraine So, the manager of Esquel training department, warmly welcomed the visit CLGO students. She introduced the historical business scope of Esquel group, corporate culture, employee care and social responsibility, and demonstrated the efforts of Esquel in inspiring employees' innovation and creativity. Then, general manager Chen Peng introduced the principle of Esquel sustainable development to CLGO students, and colleagues from the R&D department showed the real product cases produced under the principle of sustainable development. After lunch, CLGO students visited the world first-class woven fabric factory, saw the procedures of creel dyeing, warping, sizing, fabric burn-in, desizing, mercerizing, drying and finishing, preshrinking and fabric inspection, and then visited the garment factory and the equipment research and development center of Esquel. In the end, the students visited the sewage treatment plant invested by Esquel, which is mainly used to treat the sewage generated in the production process of Esquel. During the visit to the whole production base in Foshan, students appreciated the traditional manufacturing industry with a sense of science and technology, which overturned their impression of the traditional textile industry.

On September 7th, the third stop of China tour, CLGO2015 class came to Guangqi Toyota Automobile in Guangzhou. The students saw the model of the whole factory area of Guangqi Toyota Automobile in the concept pavilion of Guangqi Toyota Automobile. The explainer introduced the vehicle production process of Guangqi Toyota Automobile – from tamping, welding, forming, coating to final assembly, and introduced its “people-oriented” management concept. Then, in the environmental museum of Guangqi Toyota Automobile, students learned about the efforts of Guangqi Toyota Automobile to achieve the goal of creating a better life and serving a harmonious society through cars, such as servo press for environmental equipment. The best practice of Toyota in the field of lean production has always been a classic case in the business school. Through this field visit, the students truly felt the strong lean production atmosphere of Toyota.

In the morning of September 8th, the fourth stop of China tour, CLGO2015 class students came to Bantian Huawei base in Longgang District, Shenzhen. Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd is a private communications technology company specializing in production and sales of communications equipment, its products are mainly involved in switching network transmission network fixed wireless and wired access network and data communication network and wireless terminal products in the communication network, provide hardware software services and solutions for the world communication operators and professional network owners. At present, the products and solutions of Huawei have been applied in more than 170 countries, provides the top 45 operators among the top 50 global service operators and 1/3 of the global population. This time at Huawei headquarters, CLGO2015 students learned about the global integrated supply chain model of Huawei, including the practical experience of Huawei in the field of procurement and inventory management, such as the principles for making different security inventory of mobile phone products in different channels (operators, stores and online). In the in-depth conversation with the supply chain management colleagues of Huawei, students can strongly feel that with China manufacturing industry going abroad, the enterprises will have an increasing demand for global supply chain management talents. 

In the afternoon of September 8, the fifth stop of China tour, CLGO2015 students came to the harbor building in Yantian District, Shenzhen city to visit Yantian Port. Entrusted by Shenzhen municipal government, Yantian Port group is responsible for the unified planning, construction, operation and management of Yantian Port area and it undertakes the construction task of Yantian international transit port, port supporting services and port satellite city. Its business scope includes port development and the development and operation of port storage and other supporting service facilities, the construction and management of supporting facilities such as tunnels, highways and so on. Since the opening of the port, the container throughput of Yantian Port has continued to grow, and it has developed into the single port area with the largest container throughput in China and the single container terminal with the highest density of ocean-going container liners in mainland China. The biggest difference of Shenzhen Yantian Port from and students visit before was that Yantian Port was bearing the weight of supply chain management is the most directly related to transportation enterprise. When the students took the ship to sail in the sea at Yantian Port, watching the cargo ships full of containers sailing out of Yantian Port, they real felt that every link in the supply chain is very important.

On September 9th, the last stop of China tour, CLGO2015 students came to the headquarters of Esquel group in Hong Kong were warmly received by the leaders of Esquel headquarters. Students had face-to-face communication with senior managers on topics including the application of high-tech automation technology of Esequel and Esquel University, talent strategy planning and other aspects. The CFO of Esquel group also analyzed the real case of Esquel group from the financial perspective with the students, so that the students had a clearer understanding of the position of Esquel group in the industrial chain and its future development. After the free space lunch in Esquel, the colleagues of Esquel also led CLGO2015 class students to visit the PYEE shop of Esquel in Hong Kong Central to experience the high-end quality of Esquel garments.

So far, the visit to the Hong Kong headquarters of Esquel group has been successfully completed, which also means that the CLGO2015 class visit to Chinese manufacturing enterprises in southern China has been successfully completed.
